Peter Jones department store is hosting a series of free camera masterclasses over the next few months.
I was lucky to bag sought-after ticket (originally only 30 were available, extended to 100 after high demand) to the Kirsty Mitchell talk on Wednesday. I had seen some of Mitchell’s work during her recent exhibition at Quaglino’s, and was impressed with the level of detail and otherworldliness of her Wonderland series of photos, which borrows elements from fairy-tales, Pre-Raphaelite painting, avant-garde fashion and historical costume. It was inspiring to hear how Mitchell translated her struggle with grief over her mother’s death into such a unique and evocative series of photos, and enlightening to find out about the daily grind and risk-taking involved in developing such a rich and complex project.
Following Mitchell’s talk, camera-buffs in the audience were invited to photograph some of Mitchell’s costumed models on the roof of Peter Jones using the latest Nikon cameras, making the most of the fabulous view and the mercifully pleasant summer weather.
The next masterclass is with David Newton, sponsored by Canon, on August 28. Book early to avoid disappointment.
